Harkins Theatres was looking for an efficient way to analyze revenue across their various movie theatres. With separate databases at each movie theatre, a centralized view into all sales, and the ability to segment the data and drill down as needed, was near impossible. Harkins needed a custom, well-designed data warehouse to provide a single source of truth for data-driven decision making.
Due to the large amounts of data generated from concession sales and customer transactions, data organization and retention was less than optimal. Historical data issues hampered long-term analysis/reporting. Management wanted reporting capabilities taken to the next level with regard to providing value to the business.
Valore Partners implemented a solution in a single environment and centralized all of Harkins’ data in the cloud. The entire ETL process and analysis/reporting services were developed and deployed in the Azure Cloud environment. To achieve a seamless synchronization of the data from the back offices into the Azure Cloud managed instance, a transactional replication was implemented.
By designing a custom data warehouse, we were able to eliminate the dependence on summarized data, and enabled analysis at the deepest levels. The warehouse was also able to store older data, so that historical data could be extracted and analyzed.
Prior to this solution, Harkins’ analytics team primarily used Microsoft Excel and Tableau for reporting. Comparing the cost of a Tableau license to a Microsoft Power BI license, along with the extra features in Power BI, the management decided to make the switch to the Power BI Platform.
